Guided To The Runway
Medium: Ink on Rice Paper | Size: 8.25 x 6 inches (dimension of the book) | Set: 80 drawings
In this book / work, I explored the process of layering through a book format, where each page represented a new layer. As I worked through these layers, I encountered various stages where multiple visuals appeared and then faded away. This work evolved organically, devoid of any preconceived notions or deliberate planning. The act of drawing and painting itself gave rise to forms, which in turn dictated the dimensional spaces within the book. The book served as a personal diary and sketchbook, carried with me for a month, during which I continuously drew and wrote. The use of rice paper allowed me to experiment with the transparency, translucency, and opaqueness of black ink, creating a dynamic interplay between the medium and the surface. The title, "Guided To The Runway," emerged serendipitously from a line I came across while flipping through the pages: “…was guided to the runway like an approaching aircraft…”. This phrase encapsulated the essence of the work, tying together the themes of guidance, movement, and discovery. The text within the book provided a textural quality to the images rather than serving as descriptive content. This integration of text and image created a rich, layered narrative, inviting viewers to engage with the work on multiple levels.
