About: "Book of Templates" is an exploration of form, texture, and coded language. The work features pastel sheets intricately woven into handmade paper, creating a tactile and visual narrative. The patterns on both sides of the paper evoke a sense of ancient coded language, much like the cryptic symbols used in older civilizations. This nod to the past is intertwined with a formalist approach to art, emphasizing the aesthetics of balance and harmony. The strong tactile quality of these geometric forms, achieved through the weaving process, recalls the braille language, where the reader deciphers the text by touching the dots. This connection to braille introduces a sensory dimension to the artwork, inviting viewers to engage not just visually but also through touch. The contrast of black sheets woven into white handmade paper enhances this sensory experience, creating a striking visual balance.
The use of geometric forms and the interplay of light and shadow reflect my fascination with the inherent order and chaos in the natural world. The formalist approach, focusing on the visual elements and principles of art and design, allows me to strip away extraneous details and hone in on the core essence of the artwork. By weaving pastel sheets into handmade paper, the idea is to emphasize the materiality of the medium and the process of creation, which are also central to formalist art. The result is a harmonious composition that invites contemplation and sensory engagement.
